SEPHORA COLLECTION EDUN for Sephora Palette - Harmony

    $36.00 at Sephora

The other day I was helping this lovely young woman who was graduating from grad school, and wanted help to find a palette that she’d love, and also tips on how to apply the colors.  This young woman picked this gorgeous warm eyeshadow palette, Harmony from the EDUN for Sephora collection, and she totally had the skin tone to rock it.  One of the colors she loved was this fiery coral red, which looked awesome on her.  With bright colors, on me, I’m conservative, but everyone is different.  This gal had the personality to rock bright colors all over her lid, so that’s what I did.  I applied a golden yellow under her brows and in the inner corners of her eyes to brighten up those areas.  To keep it simple, since she’s not too experienced with makeup, I just applied the fiery coral red near the outer corners of her eyes, from her lash line to her crease.

Now, before I go on, there are some things I have to state first.  I might be new to makeup, but I study how eye makeup is applied to different eye shapes quite religiously.  I’m also very meticulous about my work, and I make sure that my client/model’s is comfortable with what I’m doing.  Lastly, I speak conversational Mandarin quite fluently.

So in comes in these girls, and the first thing I hear out of their mouth in Mandarin is, “Oh she made her makeup look so ugly.”  I saw them out of the corner of my eyes, but didn’t say anything as the gal in front of me deserves my attention.  However, when I made eye contact with them later on, the one who said it smirked at me all haughty taughty.  Girl, you’re makeup is that of every other Asian girl – thick eyeliner, light color eyeshadows, and pale lip gloss.  You can’t pull off any other look, and you also can’t apply makeup onto any other ethnicity, so STFU.

Sadly, I kept that all in, just shot back haughty taughty looks at them, and wondered if they ever figured out that I might have been able to understand them.

Anyhow, just had to get that off my chest and go back to watching So You Think You Can Dance!  The dancers this season are all so good!!!

    Angry Watermelon Against Racism!

    By GloriaYangBB · May 2, 2009 · 2 Comments ·

Here at Juicy Watermelon, I also rant about unfair and unjust issues that angers me.  One issue that truly holds dear to my heart is racism.  It angers me when authorities and "adults" turn a blind eye toward racism, just like what happened in Keswick, Ontario.

A 15 year old Asian boy had recently been suspended from school and charged with assault after breaking the nose of the of another boy who punched him after calling him a "fucking Chinese."  Basically, boy 1 bullies him, calls him a "fucking Chinese," punches him, and gets off with a school suspension, while the Asian kid, who stands up for himself, gets charged with assault.  So this is what kids are being taught nowadays?  The guy who bullies you gets a relatively free ride while you get in more trouble?

The worst part is, the vice principal of the school asked the Asian kid why he was upset over being called "Chinese" when he was Korean.

    THE HELL?

That's not the issue here!  The issue is not a mistaken ethnicity.  Sure, the white kid may want to brush up on his geography, but the other kid is using his race as an insult.  I'm Taiwanese, and if somebody calls me a "fucking Taiwanese," you bet I'll be mad too!  If that person punches me, you bet I'll punch back too!

It's not surprising to me at how stupid the bully is since the authories and adults at his school are so out of touch, and dare I say, racist as well?  They might not think they are racist, but turning a blind eye to the real situation, that's racist!  That's ignorance!

ARGH, I'm so mad, I'm ready to throw watermelons!!

Do You Care About the Brand?

    By GloriaYangBB · March 10, 2009 · 4 Comments ·

Of course, all of us are "brand whores" to an extent.  Especially in today's world, everything is Gucci this and Dior that.  It's the same when it comes to makeup.  Oh, that girl is toting around some L'oreal compact?  Oh she must not be all that.  My older friend told me that back in her partying days, everyone had to have a Chanel compact to whip out and show off at the club/bar/restaurant.  Otherwise, it would be such a social faux pas.

While I thought this sort of cattiness was only with girls say, 25 and under, apparently, it isn't.  My mom saw me blogging about the gorgeous Avon eyeshadow palette and she really liked it.  She said it has all the colors that she likes (blues, purples, nudes), and she's always liked Avon products.  Then she lamented that those other ladies (Asian moms) would laugh at her and talk shit about her for using such a "cheap" brand.

The hell?  First of all, who are these ladies talking smack about my mama?  Y'all better hide or else I'll rip yo face apart.  Nobody talks shit about my mama.  Y'all are just jealous because she looks 10 years younger than you and her man still loves her.

Sorry.. putting the ghetto away.  I'm just a tad defensive.

That got me wondering, do you guys care about the PRICE of your makeup?  I'm very very open minded when it comes to makeup, as long as the quality is good.  In fact, I hate dropping tons of cash for just one product, unless I've been eyeing it for a long time.  Case to point, my YSL Touche Eclat.  Yes, I bought it, but do I really think it's 100% better than a $20 concealer from MAC?  Lip glosses too!

As a matter of fact, most of my skincare products are drugstore brands!  Neutrogena face wash, Almay makeup remover, and Clinique (mid-low price range) moisturizer.  They work same or even better than some more expensive brands!  More money has actually been put into research for "drugstore" brands like Olay!  Who would have thought?

Anyhow.. you guys all know that I love makeup, no matter if it's $1000000 or 99 cents.  But are YOU brand-conscious?  Have you ever been made fun of for not using the most expensive brands?  What are your thoughts??
